Preventative Care and Periodontal Therapy

preventative care and periodontal therapy, periodontal therapy, implant crowns, root canal therapy

Preventative dentistry is one of our main concerns and preventive measures, if followed, will help you maintain a state of optimal dental health. To maintain long-term dental health we recommend regularly scheduled cleanings and exams. Occasionally, diagnostic x-rays will be taken as a necessary part of your individual care. Our approach to dentistry is to focus on your total health. A solid foundation is key to ensuring long lasting quality dentistry.

Periodontal Therapy

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, not only brings about severe health problems, but also can also adversely affect a patient's smile. A gum disease screening is the first step towards understanding your dental health needs. If left unchecked, gum disease can even lead to a loss of teeth. Periodontal disease is caused by a large buildup of the bacteria found in plaque, which erode the soft tissues of the mouth. The early stages (gingivitis) are marked by red, inflamed, bleeding gums. If it is detected in these early stages, gum disease can often be reversed. For those cases where it is not detected early on, periodontal disease may still be treated using the latest in periodontal dentistry procedures.

Implant Crowns

If you are missing one or more teeth, implants may be the most aesthetic way to replace them. Dr. Smith restores dental implants by attaching artificial teeth to implants anchored in the bone below the gum line. In some instances all porcelain crowns can be made for implants as well. The end result is a strong, secure tooth that is virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth. Dr. Smith has been restoring implants since 2001, and he can give you the best advice regarding the replacement of your missing teeth.

Extractions

When a tooth can no longer be repaired, we may extract it in preparation for a restorative dentistry procedure, such as dentures, implants, or fixed bridges.

Root Canal Therapy

Each of our teeth contains a nerve that extends down to the tooth's root. If the nerve becomes infected or injured, it can die. Without endodontic treatment, the tooth dies as well. Root canals are designed to save such damaged teeth. During the procedure (performed under anesthesia), a small opening is made into the tooth's crown and nerve chamber, the diseased nerve is removed, and the tooth is permanently sealed to prevent bacteria from re-infecting it. Following root canal therapy, a gold, porcelain, or tooth-colored crown will need to be placed to prevent the tooth from fracturing.

Dentures

Full dentures are meant for patients who have lost all of their teeth. Specially molded dentures slip over the gums and fit the specific contours of the patient's mouth. Full dentures aid chewing, improve speech, and help to keep the mouth and surrounding facial area in correct alignment. Thankfully, modern advances have made it almost impossible for the average person to differentiate between full dentures and natural teeth.

Partial Dentures

For some people, partial or removable dentures are the most suitable option available for replacing absent teeth. Partial dentures, which are kept in place with metal or tooth-colored clasps, aid chewing, prevent sagging of the cheeks and lips, and improve speech.
